A hypernova (or collapsar) is a very energetic supernova when a massive star (>30 solar masses) collapses to form a rotating black hole emitting twin energetic jets and surrounded by an accretion disk. They release energy an order of magnitude higher than most supernovae, and produce long gamma ray bursts.
Nova | Energy release |
---|---|
Nova | 1037 W |
Kilonova | 1038 W |
Supernova | 1044 W |
Hypernova | 1045 W |
