A moleculartronic computer stores information in the form of arrays of forced quantum electron states inside custom-built molecules, making it a combination of quantum computing and nanotechnology. This makes complex processing tasks almost instantaneous and increases the level of parallelism by orders of magnitude.

The idea behind moleculartronics is to create a new class of electronic devices that would be much smaller and more energy-efficient than traditional electronic devices based on silicon transistors. It uses the properties of individual molecules to perform basic logic operations, such as AND and OR, to create simple circuits. It will control and manipulate individual molecules in order to use them as electronic components. Scanning probe microscopy can be used to manipulate individual molecules, or chemical synthesis can create molecules with specific electronic properties.
